Issues

Solutions are rarely easy, but I believe empowerment is contagious and brings a new kind of momentum for positive transformation. As your County Legislature, I will work tirelessly to develop our neighborhoods, empower our residents, and find solutions to the challenges we face.

Guest Column Syracuse.com

Seven years ago, I worked as a guest columnist for the Post-Standard. I wrote articles analyzing a range of topics: local government consolidation, concentrated poverty, delinquent property taxes, vacant houses, youth employment, the I-81 decision, and segregation within our schools. Each article identifies a challenge, synthesizes existing research, and presents a solution. These articles highlight how I will approach many of the challenges we face. Most remain salient issues today.

  • I am a fierce advocate for reform and accountability in policing. Voting down the police contract saved the city $8.5 million even when the same contract without retroactivity of incentive payments was adopted in arbitration. I know because as Budget Director it was my job to make the financial argument against the contract in arbitration. (That was never written about publicly.) • I ran for the 15th County Legislative district once before in 2015. By running and losing I very clearly won and I am incredibly thankful for that first campaign and all I learned in it. (waer.org)
  • At that time the editorial board said “Rudd would like to see a more open county government, where ideas like the amphitheater don’t just appear out of nowhere. He would focus on neighborhoods, infrastructure and jobs. Instead of suburban sprawl, Rudd advocates development that fills in the blank spaces downtown. We like his ideas, and urge him to stay engaged in civic affairs. Rudd may lack McMahon’s polish, but he also lacks McMahon’s swagger. In a telling moment during our joint interview, Rudd urged McMahon to use “I” less and “we” more when he talks about his work on behalf of county residents. That sounds about right to us.” (syracuse.com)
